ACE’s Spanish-English Legal Interpreting course in Fall 2023

LaGuardia’s Adult and Continuing Education is offering a non-credit course on legal interpreter course in Fall 2023. This course is an outcome of several years of collaboration between LaGuardia’s Modern Languages Program and the NYS Courts System, with which some of the CUNY campuses ran the court interpreter internship program in the past few years.

This legal interpreter course is designed to prepare students for the NYS Court Interpreter examination (https://ww2.nycourts.gov/COURTINTERPRETER/ExamInformation.shtml). Candidates who passed this exam will be eligible for available staff interpreter positions within the New York State Registry of Per Diem Court Interpreters and can provide interpreting services, on an as-needed, freelance basis. Per diem court interpreters are paid $220 for a half-day (up to four hours) or $385 for a full day.

ELA’s Professional Development Series: Eric Hofmann (5/9/2023)

Please join us for the second ELA 2023 Professional Development Talk by Dean Eric Hofmann on Tuesday May 9, 2023 at 3:30pm.

  • Date: Tuesday, May 9, 2023
  • Time: 3:30pm
  • Title: The Role of Learning in Community College Academic Careers
  • Speaker: Eric Hofmann, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, LaGuardia Community College
  • Online (Zoom)
  • Abstract: In his presentation, Dean Hofmann will discuss a recent Action Research study that examined the experiences of full-time faculty at LaGuardia. The study included surveys and interviews that revealed challenges faculty have faced and the supports and strategies that helped them shape and deepen their scholarly identities. Cycle 2 data collection included the design, implementation, and evaluation of a digital portfolio intended to help faculty plan and integrate their work strategically. The study found that a scaffolded process that fosters faculty learning and is supported by colleagues may help new faculty identify ways to connect their classroom-facing activities with their other responsibilities.

  • Speaker: Luis Guzmán Valerio
  • Online (Zoom)

However, it did not teach him how to craft very common pieces of writing such as how to write a book review, how to conduct an interview, and how to write an opinion essay. His talk will not be a formal academic presentation, but rather a conversation or reflection with feedback from the audience about professional trajectories in academia.
