NYS Court Interpreter Internship Program (Fall 2024)

Please note the first (Sept – Oct) session of the Fall 2024 internship program was canceled by the NYS Court System. The second (Oct – Nov) session will take place as scheduled. If you applied for the first session, please consider joining the second session instead.

We are pleased to announce that ELA and CCPD will host another round of the Court Interpreter Internship Program in Fall 2024, in collaboration with the NYS Unified Court System. This internship will be a great opportunity for students interested in using their bilingual skill for careers related to language justice in law, justice, and public service.

Spanish-English Legal Interpreting (non-credit) course at LaGuardia Community College in Fall 2024

The “Spanish-English Legal Interpreting” course at LaGuardia Community College is designed for individuals aspiring to become court interpreters. It covers interpreting techniques, legal terminology, and provides an overview of the U.S. legal system, specifically in preparation for the Court Interpreter Exam for the New York State Unified Court System. To enroll, candidates must pass a screening exam and demonstrate proficiency in both English and Spanish. The course is scheduled from August 17, 2024, to October 19, 2024, and will be held on Saturdays from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The cost of enrollment is $1,125, with a payment plan option available. Summer On-Campus Job Opportunity for Summer 2024 ($20/hour plus $10 lunch voucher)

The Reading Program (https://www.laguardia.edu/communication-skills-and-reading-lab/) is seeking student tutors for its summer course, CSE120: Reading the Biography. There are two sections of the course, and the ideal candidates are academically ambitious students with strong reading and writing skills. The class runs from July 1 to August 1, 2024, from 9 am to 1 pm, four days a week. Tutors will be paid at least $20 per hour plus a daily $10 LaGuardia food voucher. Language Career Fair with CCPD (5/7/2024)

The Language Career Fair will feature guests who will share information about their career paths. They will discuss their fields, personal journeys, and how they relate to languages other than English.

Examining Gender and Migration through North African / Maghribi Film (6/6/2024)

Examining Gender and Migration through North African / Maghribi Film will take place on June 6, 2024, at LaGuardia Community College. The workshop aims to provide community college faculty with insights into North African culture and history through Amazigh film, emphasizing themes like indigeneity, women’s knowledge, migration, and cinematic expression. Participants will engage in discussions, group work, and brainstorming sessions to integrate these themes with their curricular goals. The workshop includes preparatory materials, a thematic bibliography, and a teaching module draft, with follow-up online support. Participants will receive a $150 stipend for their participation. PSC-CUNY Grants 2024-2025 awardees

The following two ELA faculty were awarded the PSC-CUNY Research Award 2024-2025. The PSC-CUNY Research Award program seeks to enhance the University’s role as a research institution, further the professional growth and development of its faculty, and provide support for established and junior scholars.

  • Kenneth Yin: Representation of Indigenous Nanai Culture in the Works of Russian Far Eastern Writer Grigorii Khodzher, 1929–2006
  • Tomonori Nagano: Knowledge of Japanese compound words by second/heritage learners of Japanese

Prof. Leigh Garrison-Fletcher’s new edited book: “Humanizing Collectivist Critical Pedagogy: Teaching Humanities in Community College and Beyond”

Prof. Leigh Garrison-Fletcher co-edited a new book titled “Humanizing Collectivist Critical Pedagogy: Teaching Humanities in Community College and Beyond.”

The book introduces concrete examples of teaching that creates learning spaces with students, values their mutual agency, and invites everyone to play a leading role in remaking higher education. The book is co-edited by Sujung Kim, Leigh Garrison-Fletcher & Kaysi Holman, and co-authored with (in alpha order): Rafael Costa, Davide Guiseppe Colasanto, Araminta Poole, Mike Rifino, Katina Rogers, Micheal Rumore, Oliver Sage, Stefanie Sertich, and Eduardo Vianna.

Liberal Arts Options Open House Spring 2024 (4/16/2024 @ E-Atrium)

LaGuardia Community College offers a diverse array of Liberal Arts Options catering to various academic interests. Come and speak with the program representatives and learn about the curriculum, transfer, and career paths for the Liberal Arts Options. Meet faculty and students in the LA Option. Pick up a handbook and play some interactive games!

Each program is directed by a dedicated faculty member, ensuring specialized attention and expertise. The options include Applied Math, spearheaded by Prof. Tao Chen, and Deaf Studies under Prof. John Collins, highlighting the program’s inclusivity. Newly introduced in 2022, Ethnic Studies led by Prof. Rochell Isaac, and Health Humanities in 2023, directed by Prof. Christine Marks, reflect the college’s commitment to expanding its curriculum. Other options such as History, International Studies, Japanese, Latin American Studies, and Political Science, are directed by proficient professionals like Prof. Chelsea Del Rio, Prof. Maria Savva, Prof. Tomonori Nagano, Prof. Ana Maria Hernandez, and Prof. Anja Vojvodic respectively, showcasing the broad spectrum of liberal arts education at LaGuardia Community College.
